Towards Optimised Wave Energy Convertors
An invited lecture on progress in optimisation research for wave-energy converters.
Abstract
Marine renewable energy is rapidly evolving, offering promising solutions for clean and sustainable power generation. This lecture highlights recent advancements in Oscillating Water Column (OWC) systems, with a focus on their integration into coastal infrastructure. Particular attention is given to the role of geometrical characteristics and their impact on the device’s hydrodynamic performance. Through extensive experimental and numerical research, we use a controlled rigorous approach to examine how design optimisation can significantly enhance energy capture and shoreline protection. Insights into fluid turbulence in response to structural design, scale effects, and the probabilistic nature of power generation under random wave conditions will also be discussed—offering a fresh perspective on the path toward efficient marine energy solutions. The lecture aims to introduce future pathways and foster opportunities for collaboration and the exchange of expertise.
