Rigorous Scale Modelling for Wave Energy Converters: From Laboratory Uncertainty to Real-Sea Conditions
An invited lecture for students and researchers on rigorous scale modelling for wave-energy converters, from laboratory uncertainty to real-sea conditions.
Abstract
Effective wave energy development requires more than estimating resource potential; it critically depends on testing methods that can translate laboratory evidence into credible real-sea performance. This talk examines wave energy converters through rigorous scale modelling, with emphasis on wave–structure interaction, oscillating water column hydrodynamics, uncertainty analysis, and energy-loss mechanisms. Drawing on experimental and numerical research, it highlights how model design, measurement quality, repeatability, and realistic environmental conditions shape confidence in predicted performance. The broader aim is to support the development of wave energy technologies that can be integrated with coastal infrastructure and contribute to resilient, sustainable marine energy systems.
